Treating scars after your operation

Operation scars can be treated with intensive scar massage and scar mobilization by the physiotherapist. Prevention is better than cure is often said. This is certainly the case with scars. It is better to prevent a scar than to let it mature and then treat it. When a scar has not yet fully matured, it is much easier to influence. The maturing process of a scar can take up to about 2 years. The sooner a scar is treated, the greater the chance of a good result.

The benefits of lymph taping

Lymph taping is a special application of the Medical Taping Concept using a special elastic tape. The tape is applied “under tension” to stretched skin, causing the tape to “lift” the skin, as it were; the top layer of skin is “lifted” slightly and also stretched slightly by the movement you make. The result of this is that the space between the first and second layers of skin, in which hair follicles are located, increases. This leads to better blood flow and therefore to better removal of waste products (present in lymphatic fluid). This reduces edema, while the lifting effect of the tape reduces pressure on the nerve endings, which also reduces nerve pain. Due to the larger space between the skin layers, the fibrotic tissue becomes looser in structure, allowing the small lymphatic vessels to better absorb and drain fluid. Most of the moisture is removed through the skin. Eighty percent of the lymphatic vessels are located in the skin. It is therefore important to stimulate this to drain more lymphatic fluid.

Another effect of the tape is to guide and stimulate: The edema has the property of moving along the applied tape. The special method of application stimulates the movement of the edema in the direction of the lymph nodes that are still functioning. So go there, where we would like it to be. Because the tape can remain in place for a number of days, even while showering, this is a 24-hour treatment during that time.
