Neck osteoarthritis, also known as cervical osteoarthritis, is a condition in which the bone and cartilage of the cervical vertebrae deteriorate due to wear and tear.
The neck supports the head, which weighs an average of 4-6 kilos. An ideal posture places the head directly above the shoulders, but this is not always the case due to various factors in our daily lives.
The neck consists of seven cervical vertebrae, each with projections on the back and sides. Between these vertebrae there are intervertebral discs that provide space for movement and shock absorption. The spinal cord runs through the center of the vertebrae and contains nerve pathways that send signals to the arms, hands and muscles.
As we age, the cartilage between the cervical vertebrae can wear away, causing the bone to thicken and osteophytes (bone protrusions) to form. This does not always lead to complaints, but some people experience:
Factors that contribute to neck osteoarthritis include age, hereditary predisposition, neck injuries, heavy physical work and other traumatic events.
A doctor can make the diagnosis using X-rays, CT scans, bone scans or MRIs. However, the degree of osteoarthritis does not always reflect the severity of the complaints.
Adopting a more active attitude and regular moderate-intensity exercise can help reduce or prevent complaints. Taking rest and applying heat to the neck can also provide relief from severe complaints.
