The spine consists partly of vertebrae, with intervertebral discs that provide mobility and protection against shock. With osteoarthritis in the back, or spondylosis, there is wear and tear of the cartilage in these intervertebral discs. This is a chronic condition that can gradually worsen without timely and adequate treatment.
The spine consists of vertebral bodies and facet joints, with intervertebral discs surrounded by cartilage for protection during movement. Overload and old age can cause the cartilage to deteriorate, which can lead to restriction of movement and pain, known as osteoarthritis or wear and tear of the back. Possible causes include labor-intensive work, leg length difference, obesity, incorrect footwear, abnormal position of legs or feet, and prolonged and strenuous exercise.
A characteristic complaint of back osteoarthritis is initial pain after periods of rest, such as sitting or sleeping for a long time, often accompanied by stiffness. Bone bulges between the vertebrae can pinch nerves, causing lower back pain that can radiate to the buttocks, legs and feet. In an advanced stage, inflammation can develop in muscles and tendons in the back, and broken pieces of cartilage can cause irritation to the joints.
Physiotherapy plays a crucial role in reducing pain and improving range of motion in osteoarthritis of the back. Our specialized therapists use exercise therapy to strengthen muscles, which provides more support to the affected joint and reduces strain. This improves joint movement and muscle coordination, which is essential for daily activities.
Our physiotherapists help you move safely, postpone or prevent surgery, and regain confidence in your body. Together we draw up a personal treatment plan, focused on your specific needs and goals, such as walking, climbing stairs and working.
The reimbursement for physiotherapy varies per health insurance. We have contracts with almost all health insurers. Consult your care package and our Rates and Reimbursement page for detailed information.
The goal of physiotherapy for back osteoarthritis is not only to relieve symptoms but also to improve quality of life by promoting a more active lifestyle. Consult a specialized physiotherapist for a tailor-made treatment plan and follow the advice and exercises for a healthy lifestyle.
