What is Bursitis?

A bursa is a small fluid-filled sac located between bones, muscles, tendons, and skin. Its purpose is to reduce friction and allow for smoother movement. There are several bursae in the hip, the largest of which is located on the outside of the hip, between the large thigh muscle (gluteus maximus) and the femur bone (trochanter major).

When overused or irritated, the bursa can become inflamed, leading to bursitis. This inflammation causes pain and can make moving the hip very painful.

Symptoms of Hip Bursitis

Hip bursitis can cause a range of symptoms. Some common symptoms include:

  • Pain on the outside of the hip: The pain may be mild at first, but may worsen with activities such as walking, climbing stairs, or sitting for long periods of time.
  • Pain when lying down: A lot of discomfort can occur, especially when lying on the affected hip.
  • Stiffness and swelling: The hip may feel stiff, and in some cases swelling may be visible around the painful area.
  • Pain with movement: Movements involving the hip, such as bending and straightening the leg, can cause pain.

Causes of Bursitis

There are several factors that can contribute to the development of bursitis in the hip. These include:

  • Overuse: Repetitive movements or activities such as running, cycling or climbing stairs can irritate the bursa.
  • Poor posture: Poor posture or an abnormal walking pattern can put extra pressure on the hip, which can overload the bursa.
  • Trauma: A fall or blow to the hip can lead to acute inflammation of the bursa.
  • Osteoarthritis: People with hip osteoarthritis have an increased risk of developing bursitis, because the joints are subject to extra strain.
  • Poor muscle balance: Weak or overworked muscles around the hip can put extra pressure on the bursa.

Treatment of Bursitis

At Fysiotherapie Iburg we offer a wide range of treatments to help you recover from hip bursitis. Our physiotherapists will work with you to create a personalized treatment plan to relieve pain and restore mobility.

1. Exercise therapy
Once the acute pain has subsided, we focus on restoring mobility and strengthening the muscles around the hip. This can help to reduce pressure on the bursa and prevent future complaints. We offer specific exercises that focus on improving the stability and flexibility of the hip muscles.

2. Manual Therapy
Our therapists can use manual techniques to relax tight muscles and improve hip mobility. This can help relieve pain and allow you to move more freely.

3. Dry Needling
In the presence of muscle tension or trigger points, dry needling can be an effective treatment. This technique helps to relax muscle knots and reduce pain.

4. Posture Advice and Walking Tips
Because incorrect posture or gait often contributes to bursitis, at Fysiotherapie Iburg we provide advice on how to improve your posture and reduce the load on your hip during daily activities.
